Who’s Who In St. Demetrios
MAGDALENE SANTANA
Magdalene Santana was born in California, November 13, 1984. How old does that make her? Her parents’ names are George and Katina. She has an older brother named Michael, an older sister named Maria and a younger sister named Markella. If you guessed that Magdalene is 16 years old, you were correct!

Like many of you, Magdalene comes to Saint Demetrios Church. When Magdalene was asked, “What is one of the most exciting things that has ever happened to you? Here’s what she said:
“One day my friend had gotten tickets to see a band called “Less Than Jake” and so we were standing in the line getting ready to hand over our tickets. The ticket collector lady looked at our tickets and said they were fake. The whole night we were waiting outside and I saw the bass guitarist from Less Than Jake. His name is Roger and he’s the best person in the world! We (Katie and me) told him the sad story on how we got fake tickets and he said, “I’ll do all that I can to get you guys in.” About 15 minutes later he came out of the concert hall and he took us back stage (Katie, Chris, Jason, and myself). We got to meet other bands such as, New Found Glory, Antiflag, Teen Idols, Less Than Jake and Roger had almost gotten into a fight with the security guard for sneaking us backstage. We also got to see the whole entire concert in the mosh pit. The mosh pit is where everybody dances and pushes people. I was in it! Therefore, Iconclude that that was the best night in the whole world and I even got their signatures!”
Magdalene was also asked, “When was a time you knew God had helped you?” Here’s what she said:
It was my third year in algebra and I was not doing too well in that class. My mom had told me that if I don’t pass the class, I would not get to go places with my friends or do anything fun. So I prayed to God to help motivate me to pass. I used the Creed, The Lord’s Prayer, and the Jesus Christ Prayer. By the end of the class, I got a B!”
When asked, who are some people who have helped you in life, she said:
Sr. Mary, her coach at school (Molly) her Godmother (Stavroula Matkovic), her older church friend (Tina Miller), her parents (Katina and George), and the priest at Saint Demetrios (Father Nicholas Liberis).
“Sr. Mary because I think she’s cool. She is my Sunday School teacher and she does her best to help us learn about Jesus Christ and the 12 Apostles. She also teaches us about current things that happened and the Orthodox saints.” Then she added: “All Sunday School teachers are cool because they educate us about religion.” Her coach Molly was described as a very understanding person who helped her relax and get back on track in hard times. Her Godmother, Stavroula was described as acaring individual who took time out to spend with her, take her places, drop her off places, give her gifts, and often gave her first choice when there things around the house she didn’t need but were still very good items. Magdalene says Stavroula often remembers her with gifts during her birthday and the holidays. Tina was described as a kind and generous person who often helps her and treats her to things like getting their nails done. Her parents were described as two people who have always been there to take care of her, buy her things she needs and giver lots of love. Finally, Father Liberis was described as someone who helped her find a purpose for going to church.
Magdalene said that it was hard for her to wake up in the morning and go to church standing all day. Then one day, Father Liberis came up to her and asked her to sing in the church choir. From that day on, his encouragement gave her not only a motivation for coming, but also, it helped her pay attention to all the songs and words used in church. She became alert and more understanding of the things that happened in church. Now she gets very excited to wake up and go to church!Magdalene’s Favorites:
